Advanced Drum Series Blackbird for Kontakt VST-AU-AAX overview
BLACKBIRD Drummer is one of the most comprehensive drum kits ever sampled and contains over 37.000 samples and features an extended Mapex Kit.
BLACKBIRD was engineered to perfection by Taylor Larson (Oceanic Studios / Periphery) and contains 10 individual microphone positions for ultimate mixing flexibility. You have individual microphones for kick drum, snares, hi-hats, cymbals, toms and dedicated overhead, room and custom distortion. The user-interface is highly intuitive and flexible – designed for both beginners and pros.
BLACKBIRD is our second library to utilize our new flow-note technology. One of the challenges with normal drum sampling is that elements like hats and cymbals artificially stack upon each other. In reality a cymbal doesn’t stack. It partially mutes when its hit again, while also carrying some sound from the previous hit. We call this technology, flow-note.
BLACKBIRD contains over 37.000 samples and 25.000 lines of custom code taking the playability and realism to the next level.
BLACKBIRD is powered by the powerful Kontakt engine allowing for ultimate flexibility and effective streaming. BLACKBIRD also contains features for advanced users, including ability to choose individual FX pr. microphone position. Ability to send each channel to separate output and remapping tools. The entire user-interface was designed in 3D and is incredible intuitive to use.
But most importantly BLACKBIRD just works. It sounds completely real out of the box and doesn’t take a drum scientist or rocket engineer to operate. The flow-note technology makes everything connect. The mixer allows you to dial in your desired sound in seconds.
BLACKBIRD is all about hyper-realistic sound – playability and ease of use.
Two ultra-rare kits, each with a choice of three snares, deliver the sound of pre-1950s Jazz and big band recordings. The Ebony Kit is an open, mellow, and smooth-sounding kit featuring original James Blades 12” and 13 ” toms and a 26” Leedy bass drum – all tuned with original calfskin drum heads.
The Ivory Kit is a classic Slingerland Radio King kit from the early 1940s with 13” and 16” toms and a 24” bass drum. Also equipped with original calfskin heads, this kit is warm, chunky, and somewhat tighter than the Ebony kit.

Both kits were recorded using only the best period equipment, including the legendary REDD.17 valve mixing desk from 1958, an EMI TG mixing desk introduced in 1967 as well as a valve Studer J37 4 track 1-inch tape machine from 1964.
Each kit was recorded with an array of microphones from the studio’s microphone collection – one of the largest in the world. A selection of classic Neumann, AKG, Sony and STC models were used to record each drum and percussion element from both close range and further away – capturing the legendary ambience of Abbey Road’s Studio Two.
